چکیده

Abstract As a result of numerous fossil and subfossil finds ostriches, there is great demand for comprehensive osteometric dataset the living species subspecies genus Struthio. We meet this by providing set > 100 measurements sample 18 sexed skeletons, including all recently extinct ostriches. provide first mensural data two subspecies, hitherto questioned Struthio camelus spatzi from north-western Africa Arabian ostrich, syriacus. The unique skeletal proportions S. c. spatzi, with relatively short wing, broad pelvis, tarsometatarsus big third toe, confirm validity taxon suggest an increased stability at expense cursoriality, which might have contributed to its extermination humans. Our biometric analysis entire suggests subtle sexual dimorphism in ostrich skeleton, females having more robust limb bones (especially wider and/or deeper ends) despite being on average smaller than males. If confirmed further research, size-independent reflect independent regulation longitudinal transverse dimensions as revealed several studies morphological integration (covariance among traits) avian skeleton.

Pulmonary pneumaticity in the postcranial skeleton of extant aves: a case study examining Anseriformes.

Anseriform birds were surveyed to examine how the degree of postcranial pneumaticity varies in a behaviorally and size-diverse clade of living birds. This study attempts to extricate the relative effects of phylogeny, body size, and behavioral specializations (e.g., diving, soaring) that have been postulated to influence the extent of postcranial skeletal pneumaticity. One hundred anseriform sp...

The anthropoid postcranial axial skeleton: comments on development, variation, and evolution.

Within-species phenotypic variation is the raw material on which natural selection acts to shape evolutionary change, and understanding more about the developmental genetics of intraspecific as well as interspecific phenotypic variation is an important component of the Evo-Devo agenda. The axial skeleton is a useful system to analyze from such a perspective. Its development is increasingly well...
